Today, President Obama announced a new
energy strategy-and even sounded a little like an Energy Citizen at times.
We
agree:
- Cut
imported oil by 1/3 within a decade.
- Oil
will be "an important part of our energy portfolio for some time," and we
need to find and produce more oil at home.
- "Producing
more oil in America can help lower oil prices, can help create jobs, and
can enhance our energy security, but we have to do it in the right way."
This
all sounds good, but the President did make some claims where we would like to
set the record straight:
His claim that he is "working to expedite
new drilling permits for companies" is contradicted by the facts.
The Department of the Interior has issued a measly 7
permits since lifting the moratorium-the unnecessarily slow pace is
unreasonable, job killing, and prohibitive.
The President's claim that oil companies
are sitting on leases they simply refuse to develop, despite the obvious
economic incentives to do so at viable sites, is simply untrue. The Administration should issue the necessary
permits for seismic studies and offshore production-and energy producers can
respond with increased activity.
We look forward to working with all
Americans to meet the President's goal to reduce our national dependence on
foreign oil-and enhance our economic security at the same time.
