Nearly 300 people gathered as part of an Energy Citizens Rally for Jobs and Affordable Energy at the Denai’ina Convention Center on Aug. 31, 2009.
Organized by an alliance of 23 national groups and numerous local organizations, the rally was a forum where Americans from all walks of life—truckers, energy workers, homemakers and others—could express their views on American jobs and affordable energy.
The Anchorage rally was held to remind Congress that energy is the backbone of the U.S. economy.
A variety of speakers stood up to tell their stories, including Vince Beltrami, president of the Alaska AFL-CIO; Andre Halcro of AVIS Alaska; Linda Leary of Carlile Transportation Systems; Crystal Nygard, owner of Tutka LLC; and Tara Sweeney of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation.
Attendees signed a petition urging Sens. Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski to reject costly climate change policies.
