On August 18, 2009, Houston’s Verizon Wireless Theater was filled to capacity with about 3,500 Energy Citizens rallying for jobs and affordable energy.
Organized by an alliance of 23 national groups and numerous local organizations, the rally was a forum where Americans from all walks of life—farmers, truckers, energy workers, homemakers and others—could express their views on the legislation’s potential impact on their jobs and lives.
The Houston rally was held to remind Congress that energy is the backbone of the U.S. economy.
Speakers at the event included Harry Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, who said that the climate issue needs to be addressed, but the House bill is not the best way to do it. He called on the Senate to get it right.
Jane Van Ryan of API’s Energy Tomorrow Blog attended the Houston Energy Citizens rally and developed this video to recap her experience at the event. She talked to a number of rally attendees to gather their thoughts on the rally and the proposed climate legislation.
