You Won’t Believe Who Just Blocked a Costly EV Mandate

A grassroots network of concerned citizens helped put the brakes on a sweeping electric vehicle mandate before it could go nationwide.

The advocacy group, Energy Citizens, is a coalition of everyday Americans who advocate for affordable, reliable energy. Energy Citizens played a key role in blocking the spread of California’s Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) regulation. The policy would have effectively mandated electric vehicle adoption in states across the country by requiring that nearly all new cars sold be electric by 2035.

The group includes workers, retirees, small business owners, students, and community leaders who are united by a shared belief that energy policy should reflect the needs of everyday Americans.

Greg, an Energy Citizen from Ohio, said he joined the movement because he saw how energy issues affect the people around him.

“I joined Energy Citizens to combat the craziness of energy mandates, which essentially try to control how we live day to day,” says Greg. “They are not realistic and there needs to be a voice to support our vital oil and natural gas workers.”

In the case of ACC II, Energy Citizens mobilized quickly. Thousands submitted public comments, contacted their representatives, and shared personal stories about the consequences of one-size-fits-all mandates.

Their efforts made a difference. After sustained pressure, a bipartisan group of senators passed a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to overturn the U.S. EPA waiver that authorized the ACC II rule.

The ACC II victory preceded another landmark energy achievement for Energy Citizens. The recently passed 2025 tax reconciliation package marks the most significant energy legislation in a generation. This law mandates 30 offshore lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and ensures quarterly onshore lease sales, while advancing tax policy that encourages ongoing investment in American oil and natural gas development.

While these wins are significant, Energy Citizens are staying engaged. The network remains committed to ensuring that policymakers hear directly from constituents who understand the importance of American energy.
