{"id":1003,"date":"2021-09-24T13:59:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T13:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energycitizens.org\/?p=1003"},"modified":"2022-03-04T20:13:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T20:13:33","slug":"developing-nations-pushback-on-anti-oil-gas-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energycitizens.org\/es\/news\/developing-nations-pushback-on-anti-oil-gas-pressure\/","title":{"rendered":"Las naciones en desarrollo rechazan la presi\u00f3n contra el petr\u00f3leo y el gas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With the U.N.\u2019s General Assembly meeting this week, I wanted to flag several comments from leaders in developing countries pushing back against recent calls to end new natural gas and oil development, or to restrict bilateral and multilateral funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigerian President <a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/news\/nigeria-reiterates-commitment-to-just-transition-to-net-zero-emissions\/\">Muhammadu Buhari<\/a> has warned \u201cthe move towards defunding of natural gas projects\u2026would put countries, such as ours, in a very dire situation and make the [energy] transition extremely difficult for us.\u201d Despite warning like this, anti-natural gas rhetoric has continued from some policymakers in the developed world, including the UN Secretary General who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2021-05-06\/secretary-generals-remarks-2021-petersberg-climate-dialogue-delivered\">has said he\u2019d<\/a> \u201cwelcome countries that have pledged to end fossil fuel finance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural gas is simultaneously lifting millions out of energy poverty and helping to <strong>reduce<\/strong> the growth of global CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions. Instead of pressuring developing countries to expand intermittent renewable energy while simultaneously working to end funding for most sources of dispatchable generation, activists should recognize <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MeganBloomgren\/status\/1408092750390640642\">natural gas enables the expansion<\/a> of renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Leaders In Developing Nations Resist Restrictions On New Natural Gas And Oil Development<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Equatorial Guinea\u2019s Energy Minister,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theafricareport.com%2F19861%2Fafrican-oil-ministers-push-back-against-green-agenda%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CParkerS%40api.org%7Cb8cd1ed2c773434dd01d08d97d422907%7C2df2418fe75f46f0898d65f4eeecb14b%7C0%7C0%7C637678545370049200%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=Lqk7q6y7yk%2BIsDGs4yBin4SVBruoT3uA2jFeYZg86GQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><strong>Gabriel Mbega Obiang Lima<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> \u201cWe must protect the environment, but also create jobs for young people. We are resisting that, we will do what we can do so that we give electricity to our people at an affordable price, and transition from high emissions to low emissions over a member-nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theafricareport.com%2F19861%2Fafrican-oil-ministers-push-back-against-green-agenda%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CParkerS%40api.org%7Cb8cd1ed2c773434dd01d08d97d422907%7C2df2418fe75f46f0898d65f4eeecb14b%7C0%7C0%7C637678545370099176%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=henn9JQd6d%2B0%2BtAafbBWMwkZzRNHuZ60yxZzr8BGgjI%3D&amp;reserved=0\">The countries\u2019 energy needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Calls To Halt New Natural Gas And Oil Development Ignore Two Important Realities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Natural gas and oil, including U.S. exports, can improve the quality of life for those living in energy poverty now: <\/u><\/strong><strong><u><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <a The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/en\/news\/population\/world-population-prospects-2019.html\">U.N. estimates<\/a> the global population will grow by two billion people though 2050, reaching 9.7 billion people, with about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/media\/files\/files\/cd53719f\/bi-brief-061518-ces-energyoutlook.pdf\">90% of this growth<\/a> happening in Asia and Africa.
