Unlocking America’s energy potential.
You never know until you try, right? Well, the same can be said for America’s energy development. For decades, anti-energy groups have done everything they can to keep our coasts off limits for exploration. But, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has now proposed a new five-year leasing program that could help us explore untapped potential.
The economic impacts of offshore exploration would be felt throughout the U.S. In the coming decades, hundreds of thousands of American jobs could be created by the industry. These jobs include work in oil and natural gas production, manufacturing and fabricating equipment, engineering and technical services, construction, and installation. Energy companies work closely with communities to ensure that local residents have access these job opportunities. At the same time, in an economic chain reaction, jobs in other sectors of the local economy boom, including healthcare, retail, food services, and real estate.
New offshore discoveries could also generate significant economic activity for our local communities across the U.S.
Reliance on foreign nations for oil and natural gas jeopardizes our energy and national security. It makes us vulnerable to upheavals or unrest in energy-producing nations. It puts us at the mercy of unfriendly rulers. And it risks putting our Armed Forces in harm’s way. Offshore energy development will strengthen our energy security. By producing more of our own energy, we will reduce the power of hostile nations and limit our exposure to price shocks that come from disruptions of foreign energy production. We are an energy superpower, and offshore energy development will give us leverage on the world stage. We can be a key energy supplier to our friends and allies. We can set the global energy agenda.
Offshore drilling is safer than it’s ever been. Health, community safety, worker safety, and environmental protection are at the heart of all offshore energy operation. There is no compromise on this commitment—ever. To protect people and environment, aggressive efforts to improve regulations, safety practices, and advanced technology have been implemented.
Technology innovation has impacted every aspect of our lives and economy, including energy. New “smart” technologies are making energy development safer and more efficient. State-of-the-art monitoring and equipment, combined with advanced engineering, make energy production and transportation safer than ever.
Safety investments help prevent spills and protect ocean environments. Key components that make offshore exploration and drilling safe include but are not limited to:
- Certified, state-of-the art well design
- Advanced control and safety systems
- Well containment technologies
- Double-hulled vessels
Offshore energy exploration and development is tightly regulated and overseen by the federal government. All energy operations must meet requirements enforced by:
- Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM)
- Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE)
- United States Coast Guard
A detailed review, permitting, and approval process precedes any offshore projects.
And we know from decades of experience that offshore operations safely coexist with local industries like tourism and fishing, as well as with military operations.
