HomeEnergy 101American Energy Security Framework: Frequently Asked Questions

American Energy Security Framework: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the American Energy Security Framework?

The American Energy Security Framework is the American Petroleum Institute’s policy roadmap for strengthening U.S. energy security. It focuses on three core pillars: energy supply, energy infrastructure, and energy resilience.

Recent geopolitical disruptions and their impact on global energy markets have been a stark reminder that energy security remains inseparable from economic security and geopolitical stability.

The path forward is clear: expand energy options, reduce points of failure, and build an energy system prepared for an increasingly uncertain world. The American Energy Security Framework provides a roadmap for achieving that goal.

What is energy security?

Energy security is the ability of a country to provide reliable, affordable, and available energy to homes, businesses, and manufacturers while remaining resilient during disruptions and unexpected events.

Why is energy security important?

Energy security affects virtually every part of our economy and daily lives, including electricity generation, transportation, manufacturing, home heating, and countless other essential services.

In fact, the U.S. energy industry supports 10.6 million jobs, making energy security an important driver of economic growth and American competitiveness.

What is energy infrastructure?

Energy infrastructure includes the systems that move energy from where it is produced to where it is needed.

This can include pipelines, ports, roads, railways, storage facilities, and other energy-related projects.

Without infrastructure, energy cannot efficiently reach homes, businesses, and communities.

What is energy resilience?

Energy resilience is the ability of the energy system to continue operating during disruptions and recover quickly when challenges arise.

A resilient energy system helps America prepare for severe weather, supply chain disruptions, cyber threats, equipment failures, and changes in global energy markets.

Why should Americans care about the American Energy Security Framework?

Energy security affects everyday life. It helps keep energy affordable and reliable, supports American jobs, powers businesses and manufacturers, and strengthens the nation’s ability to respond to disruptions.

The American Energy Security Framework is designed to help ensure Americans have access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy, even when supply disruptions occur.

A secure energy system helps provide:

  • Affordable energy
  • Reliable energy
  • Greater resilience during disruptions

Why is offshore production important for energy security?

Offshore energy development helps strengthen U.S. energy supply by expanding access to domestic energy resources. Increasing domestic energy production can improve long-term energy security, support reliable energy supplies, and reduce dependence on foreign energy sources.

How does permitting reform relate to energy security?

Permitting reform helps strengthen energy infrastructure by improving the process for reviewing and developing energy projects. More efficient permitting can reduce unnecessary delays, improve project certainty, and support the infrastructure needed to deliver affordable, reliable energy.
