How Everyday Iowans Took a Stand Against a Harmful Energy Bill
A grassroots coalition of Americans delivered a significant victory for Iowa’s energy future.
Energy Citizens is a nationwide network of everyday people—including farmers, business owners, retirees, and community leaders—who advocate for affordable, reliable energy and sensible policies.
In Iowa, Energy Citizens played a key role in defeating House File 639 (HF 639), a bill that would have restricted the use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines but also introduced regulations threatening critical energy infrastructure and economic development.
Over several weeks, more than 2,000 Iowans in the Energy Citizens network contacted lawmakers, submitted letters, and expressed concerns over how HF 639 could undermine energy reliability, stall new investments, and jeopardize tens of thousands of jobs tied to Iowa’s oil, natural gas, and ethanol industries.
As a result of this sustained grassroots pressure, Governor Kim Reynolds vetoed the bill in June.
This outcome demonstrates the impact of organized grassroots advocacy. When citizens engage with their elected officials and speak out on important issues, their voices can influence critical policy decisions and protect the economic well-being of their communities.
