Consumer Choice: Safeguarding Vehicle Options in an Evolving Market

Electric Vehicles (EVs) May Not Work for Everyone

It’s clear that many consumers remain uncertain about making the switch to an EV. There are more than 260 million passenger gasoline-powered vehicles on the road today, and only 3 million EVs. While EVs are an option for many consumers, factors like limited charging infrastructure, high costs and lifestyle needs mean they’re simply not suitable for all. With a wide range of options available, consumers should have the freedom to choose the vehicle that aligns best with their individual needs and preferences.

Grid Demand and Infrastructure Challenges

The rapid growth of EVs required to meet the new tailpipe rules places substantial demands on infrastructure, particularly the need for extensive charging networks and major power grid upgrades. As state and federal mandates increasingly push for higher EV adoption, our current grid capacity will face mounting pressure. Supporting these mandates requires significant investments in grid resilience and widespread charging stations. Without careful, strategic planning, this shift could lead to resource strains, rising costs and potential reliability issues.

Impact of Government Mandates on Consumers

Government mandates and regulations – like the EPA’s tailpipe emissions rule requiring roughly two-thirds of all new consumer vehicles to be full battery or plug-in electric vehicles by 2032 – are reshaping consumer choice by limiting the types of vehicles that will be available on the market. Many argue this approach could drive up vehicle costs, limit options and push consumers toward choices that may not suit their needs, lifestyle or budget. These regulations, coupled with similar regulations for heavy-duty vehicles have wide-reaching effects on industries where viable alternatives to gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles are often limited, such as long-haul trucking.

What Americans Are Saying

Americans across the country are raising concerns about mandates that limit their new vehicle choice. A recent Morning Consult poll shows that swing-state voters in particular are calling for more transparency around energy policies that impact their everyday lives. The message is clear: Americans want both options and clarity on the future of their energy choices, especially when it comes to the vehicles they drive. These views underscore the importance of preserving choice and ensuring all voices are heard in discussions about the future of energy.
